Sound and LightBy Kate Powell

SC.3.P.10.3 Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another.
SC.3.P.10.4 Demonstrate that light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed.


Sound travles in waves. It can travel through objects.When a speaker bursts with music it is vibrating. When the speaker transerfers the energy into the air particles they bump into each other and the sound transfers out. So the sound actualy travles because the gas particles bump into each other.

  • Refraction-when light waves are bent while they are passing through one material two another
  • Reflection- Light waves will bounce of an object creating a reflection (example of object:glass)
  • Absorbed- Light can be absorbed when an object is much darker than the the light waves.



At my house we have two glass windows that have a pattern to them and in the late afternoon when the sun is facing the front part of the house (were the windows are) you will see that there are tiny rainbows all over the floor.Thats because of refraction. Light is made up of all of the colors of the rainbow (red orange yellow blue green purple.) It is seporated into the rainbow colors because the light is refracted.


Light can also be absorbed by colors that are dark. Thats why people tell you to wear white in the summer to stay cooler and black in the winter to stay warmer. As I said before light is all the colors of the rainbow, just whaterver color you see is absorbed the most.


Reflection is when you get light that can't pass througt an material and bounces back instead.It travles back toward your eyes and you get a reflection of yourself.
